People visit your site for specific information, and if they cannot find it they will quickly go elsewhere, leaving with the impression that your business is disorganized in more than just its website.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; color: #474747; line-height: 21px; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">A good navigation structure should be seamless and will keep visitors on your site longer, which means potentially more readers, subscribers, sales or leads — whichever is your primary objective.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; color: #474747; line-height: 21px; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">Website navigation affects both usability and accessibility, so it’s important to make it a primary concern. Most websites and blogs use common navigational techniques that are expected by the average visitor. The pages and sections of the site should be easy and logical for visitors to maneuver. Don’t make your visitors <strong>think</strong> about how to navigate your site; it should be effortless and natural.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; color: #474747; line-height: 21px; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">There are several principles you can follow to create an effective navigation structure:</p>
<ul style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; list-style-type: square; list-style-position: outside; list-style-image: url(http://5.mshcdn.com/wp-content/themes/v7/img/bullet_img.gif); background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">
<li style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1.5em; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">Use icons to aid navigation. They’re both visually appealing and easy to use and understand.</li>
<li style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1.5em; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">Create logical groups of related links, with the most important links on the top-level navigation bar and functional (dashboard, account, settings, etc.) and legal (copyright, privacy, terms) located elsewhere.</li>
<li style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1.5em; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">Provide location information so users know where they are on any given page and how to proceed to another area of the website. This can be achieved by using <a style="font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; color: #1e598e; text-decoration: none; cursor: pointer; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; margin: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;" href="http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/03/17/breadcrumbs-in-web-design-examples-and-best-practices-2/" target="_blank">Breadcrumb navigation</a>.</li>
</ul>
<hr style="display: block; height: 1px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-left-width: 0px; border-top-width: 1px; border-top-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 24px; margin-left: 0px; border-right-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-bottom-style: dotted; border-bottom-color: #cccccc; padding: 0px; border: initial initial initial;" />
<h2 style="margin-top: 24px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 24px; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; font-weight: bold; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">2. No Clear Calls To Action</h2>
<hr style="display: block; height: 1px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-left-width: 0px; border-top-width: 1px; border-top-style: none; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 24px; margin-left: 0px; border-right-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-bottom-style: dotted; border-bottom-color: #cccccc; padding: 0px; border: initial initial initial;" />
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; color: #474747; line-height: 21px; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">
<p><img style="outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; cursor: auto; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; margin: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;" title="CallToAction" src="http://6.mshcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/CallToAction.jpg" alt="" width="640" height="348" /></p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; color: #474747; line-height: 21px; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">The fundamental error of many small business websites is the lack of a <a style="font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; color: #1e598e; text-decoration: none; cursor: pointer; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; margin: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;" href="http://boagworld.com/design/10-techniques-for-an-effective-call-to-action/">clear call to action</a>. We’ve all seen bland small-business brochure websites with nothing but endless descriptive paragraphs. If you aren’t leading users to commit to an action (buy a product, contact you or subscribe, for example), then you are losing them.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; color: #474747; line-height: 21px; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">Driving traffic to your website is important, but that traffic is useless if your primary call to action is a plain “click here” link buried in a sea of text. Call-to-action buttons are a great way to grab the user’s attention, and these buttons can be the key to higher conversions. Investing time and consideration into creating successful calls to action can help guide users and address their needs while achieving your own business goals.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; color: #474747; line-height: 21px; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">It’s important to keep the following best practices in mind when creating an optimal call to action:</p>
<ul style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; list-style-type: square; list-style-position: outside; list-style-image: url(http://5.mshcdn.com/wp-content/themes/v7/img/bullet_img.gif); background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">

But it should be, because if your website text does not have sufficient contrast compared to its background, people will have difficulty reading your content, especially people with poor vision or <a style="font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; color: #1e598e; text-decoration: none; cursor: pointer; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; margin: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;" href="http://particletree.com/features/interfaces-and-color-blindness/" target="_blank">color-blindness</a>.</p>

It can equally be effective in organizing and defining the flow and hierarchy of a page, and it’s therefore an essential principle to pay attention to during the design process. Here are some tips:</p>

This works especially well within a minimal color scheme, and it means you don’t have to necessarily rely on color.</li>

Unfortunately, an overwhelming number of small businesses get so caught up in overloading the user with information that they overlook how that information is <em>presented</em>.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; color: #474747; line-height: 21px; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">Most people do not read unless it’s absolutely necessary, and they prefer to scan through information quickly to get to the points of interest. This is why it’s so important to establish a strong visual <a style="font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; color: #1e598e; text-decoration: none; cursor: pointer; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; margin: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;" href="http://www.vanseodesign.com/web-design/visual-hierarchy/" target="_blank">content hierarchy</a> so users can quickly scan your site and sifting through relevant information. Many small business owners tend to cram as much as they can onto a single page — the end result is a busy, cluttered and unreadable page.</p>

Simply saying &#8220;great work!&#8221; isn&#8217;t enough &#8212; you should be as detailed as possible.  A comment along the lines of &#8220;love the bridge and colors, but the text placement is not working out; can you try some alternative?&#8221; gives the designer a clear idea of what you like, what you dislike, and what type of revisions should be made.</span></p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-left: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; font-family: inherit; text-align: left; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">The next time you need to provide feedback to a designer or design team, here are four questions to ask yourself to make sure your message is clear, meaningful and relevant.</p>
<h4 style="font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; font-size: 18px; line-height: 1; font-family: inherit; text-align: left; color: #333333; padding: 0px; margin: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">1. Is the feedback specific and actionable?</h4>
<p><img style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-left: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; font-size: 13px; line-height: 1; font-family: inherit; text-align: left; float: left; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;" src="http://www.zurb.com/blog_uploads/0000/0785/circles.jpg" alt="" width="240" /></p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 250px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; font-family: inherit; text-align: left; border: 0px initial initial;">There must be a call to action and you&#8217;ll want to be sure the designer can follow through on most or all of the suggestions you make. Also, make sure to differentiate between changes you want now, and what you consider to be future changes &#8212; don&#8217;t make the designer guess. Deadlines and timeframes should be reasonable enough to allow for the changes you&#8217;re requesting.</p>
<div class="clear"></div>
<h4 style="font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; font-size: 18px; line-height: 1; font-family: inherit; text-align: left; color: #333333; padding: 0px; margin: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">2. Is the feedback contextual?</h4>
<p><img style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-left: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; font-size: 13px; line-height: 1; font-family: inherit; text-align: left; float: left; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;" src="http://www.zurb.com/blog_uploads/0000/0788/bigger.jpg" alt="" width="240" /></p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 250px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; font-family: inherit; text-align: left; border: 0px initial initial;">The designer should be able to quickly identify what your suggestions mean. Notable is a great option for putting feedback directly on a screenshot. Alternatively a print out with hand written notes works well too.</p>
<div class="clear"></div>
<h4 style="font-size: 18px; font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; line-height: 1; font-family: inherit; text-align: left; color: #333333; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;">4. Does the feedback encourage your team?</h4>
<div class="clear"></div>
<p><img style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-left: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; font-size: 13px; line-height: 1; font-family: inherit; text-align: left; float: left; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;" src="http://www.zurb.com/blog_uploads/0000/0787/grid.jpg" alt="" width="240" /></p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 250px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; font-family: inherit; text-align: left; border: 0px initial initial;">Tear down any roadblock so the team feels empowered to get results. Get people excited about your insights and save any cutting or extremely negative remarks for a private conversation. But don&#8217;t sugar coat mistakes or problems.</p>
<div class="clear"></div>
<h4 style="font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; font-size: 18px; line-height: 1; font-family: inherit; text-align: left; color: #333333; padding: 0px; margin: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">4. Is the feedback within the recipient&#8217;s scope of skills?</h4>
<p><img style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-left: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; font-size: 13px; line-height: 1; font-family: inherit; text-align: left; float: left; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;" src="http://www.zurb.com/blog_uploads/0000/0786/skills.jpg" alt="" width="240" /></p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 250px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; font-family: inherit; text-align: left; border: 0px initial initial;">Whenever possible, break down the feedback and expected actions into smaller, obtainable chunks. This will expose any potential challenges that occur when the changes you request don&#8217;t match the designer&#8217;s skill set. Remember, just because it needs to get done, doesn&#8217;t mean the person you&#8217;re talking to is the one to do it.</p>
<div class="clear"></div>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 250px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; font-family: inherit; text-align: right; "><em>Thanks to our friends at ZurbApps for this great contribution.</em></p>
